Group Leader
Position Purpose:
Group Leaders are the primary caregivers for each City Surfer. The Group Leader is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding City Surfers in their personal growth and daily living skills.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of City Surfers in their City Surfer group within activities and throughout the after school in order to meet the intended City Surfer outcomes. Apply basic youth development principles in working with City Surfers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
2. Participate in the development and implementations of program activities for City Surfers within the mission and outcomes. Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities. Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities. Design and lead weekly field trips. Assist in program areas such as cycling, fitness, gardening, photography, nature adventures and all other activities, as directed.
3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for City Surfers and stuff. Provide the daily care of each City Surfer within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs. Ensure that City Surfers receive their medications as directed by Health Care Manager. Be alert to City Surfers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with after school health manager and/or after school director when appropriate. Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to after school director.
4. Be a role model to City Surfers and staff in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to City Surfers and others in regard to general after school procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
5. Represent the after school when interacting with parents and community members. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their City Surfers to have a successful experience. Follow safety and security protocols when City Surfers are in public while presenting a positive image of the after school.
Other Job Duties:
Provide supervision for City Surfers while City Surfers are transported to and from after school during scheduled field trips off of after school property. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested. Maintain accurate attendance records.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
Must be 18 years of age or high school graduate. Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR and NYS Mandated Reporter prior to first day of work. Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work. Ability to interact with all age levels.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of the development needs of youth. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program areas designated after school program areas.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to City Surfers and staff. Ability to observe City Surfer behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist City Surfers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of City Surfers. Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and after school activities. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate City Surfer activities/programs and the ability to lift 50lbs. Willingness to work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
